Genus Architecture was formed in 2013 by a handful of colleagues with expertise in design and development. Drawn together by a shared history and appreciation for the transformational capacity of design, Genus provides its clientele with unparalleled service and design thinking. Together, our directors bring 35 years of collective experience in the design of market, academic, and cultural projects. Each has been the recipient of local and national awards and each has been singled out by their peers for their dedication to the advancement of the architectural profession.

The name 'Genus' is taken from the principle of genus-loci, a Roman term meaning 'the protective spirit of place'. Our studio begins each design with an inquisitive process to discover the unique characteristics of the project site. Design decisions which might otherwise have a formal or arbitrary significance are brought under the mantle of the spirit of place as we synergize the demands of the real-world program with the budget and schedule. With the site as our guide, design becomes for us a walk along a path created by the innate power of place. Clients can take heart that we work on the same side of the table as we assist them in the search for unique and authentic architecture that faithfully interprets this spirit.

In the past two years, Genus has thrived. We presently are involved in projects of scale in Washington state, Arizona, Colorado, and Tennessee. We currently have four projects under development or construction totaling $50M in value and 335 thousand square feet. Our focus is diverse; our two directors lead the design of academic projects and housing side-by-side with the design of museums and libraries. Our practice is collaborative by nature and design-focused. We create most of our own mock-ups and prototypes prior to completion of documentation so that our clients can see, feel, and touch the design.

We seek the right fit as much as our clients do. Design requires intensive time spent in conversation and we know how important it is to feel excited, respected, and confident in a designer's professional acumen. If you seek transformational design that creates its own legacy paired with a dedicated staff working at the peak of professional excellence, we would love to help you start the conversation.
